General

DELF is the abbreviation for "Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française" and requires the elementary competence levels of the CEFR (A1 - B2).

DALF is the abbreviation for "Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française" and assumes the advanced levels of competence of the CEFR (C1 - C2).

exams

The DELF and DALF certificates are state language diplomas awarded by the French Ministry of Education. The exams are standardized and recognized worldwide. They are developed by the Center international d'études pédagogiques (CIEP) on behalf of the French Ministry of Education.

The structure and the tasks of the examinations were developed by the CIEP (Center international d'études pédagogiques, dt. International Center for Studies in Education) taking into account current educational research results. Abroad, the Cultural Department of the French Embassy is responsible for the organization and local administration.

The total of six DELF / DALF exams can be taken independently of each other. The CEFR describes in detail for each level the knowledge that French learners need to achieve. These are useful for teachers to classify learning content and to make progress comparable.

At each level, from A1 to C2, the four communicative competencies - oral and written comprehension, verbal and written skills - are examined through a series of tasks. DELF / DALF diplomas can be taken without a placement test or special proof.

DELF and DALF are both French language certification programs issued by the Ministry of Education (Ministère de l'Education Nationale).

The CIEP (Center international d'études pédagogiques) is responsible for the educational and administrative implementation of this certificate and prepares the content of the examination.

There are a total of 900 recognized examination centers in 154 different countries worldwide where French language certificates can be taken.

The special CIEP Expertise consists of competence and experience:

  • the CIEP test office in the field of linguistics and didactics
  • the CIEP validation center in psychometric analysis and quality assurance
  • CIEP service team audit processing with its customer focus and implementation standards
  • the CIEP evaluation office, which guarantees a secure and efficient result determination

DELF / DALF can only be taken by foreigners and serve as official proof of existing language competence for the practical application and mastery of the French language.

The DELF / DALF exams can be taken independently of each other, without time restrictions, in the same country or in different countries. DELF / DALF certificates are valid for an unlimited period of time.

DELF A1 - Elementary French voice application

A1 is the elementary level and therefore suitable for beginners. The holder of such a diploma can talk about himself and his nearer environment.

The exam consists of four parts, with 25 points per discipline. The exam is passed if a total of at least 50 out of 100 and in no part less than five points has been achieved.

1. Listening comprehension

Short situations (totally three minutes) from everyday life are played twice. Subsequently, questions must be answered.

2. Reading comprehension

Here, too, everyday things are treated in three to five documents, and then questions have to be answered.

3. Write

Filling out a form, writing simple texts like postcards or similar.

4. Speak

Interview conducted by the Examiner, Simulated Dialogue, Presentation of Your Own Person This is followed by the Oral Exam (individually, 10 minutes preparation and 5 - 7 minutes examination).

DELF A2 - advanced speech application

The DELF A2 already certifies the candidate with advanced skills. The participant is considered here as part of the society. Consequently, he has to master things like politeness and simple conversation.

1. Listening comprehension

Questions about a long document (about eight minutes, played twice) as well as about various short documents (commercials, etc.). Overall, the audio document takes about ten minutes.

2. Reading comprehension

Questions about a literary or journalistic text from 1500 to 2000 words.

3. Write

Composing a synthesis of various textual documents (total approx. 1000 words) and an argument based on these documents. You can choose from two subject areas: natural sciences or humanities.

4. Speak

Lecture followed by a discussion with the jury. There are the same subjects as for the written part to choose from.

DALF C2 - competent speech application

The candidate must now prove that he can solve academic or other continuing tasks. He is expected to have a precise, adequate language and an attentive expression.

The written part lasts 3 hours 30 minutes, the oral part consists of one hour preparation and 30 minutes exam. In each discipline 50 points each can be achieved.

To summarize the audio document (played twice), make own remarks on the problem dealt with and then lead a discussion with the jury. Once again, the two faculties of Humanities or Natural Sciences are available for selection.

Production of a structured text (article, speech, report) on the basis of an information dossier of 2000 words.
