Level A0 • Absolute Beginners

The A0 level is for absolute beginners with no prior knowledge of the language. You are at this level when you start learning a particular foreign language for the first time.

Level A1 • Limited Language Skills

At the A1 level, language learners have minimal knowledge and understanding of the language. They can introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions about personal details, and participate in simpleconversations in familiar contexts. Vocabulary and grammar are limited, and communication is often supported by gestures and context.

Level A2 • Basic Language Skills

At A2 level, students can communicate in simple and repetitive situations that require a basic exchange of information. They can manage simple social interactions, e.g. shopping, ordering food or making travel arrangements. Although vocabulary and grammar are reasonably basic, they can express opinions and preferences on familiar topics.

Level B1 • Intermediate Language Skills

This level reflects the ability to use the language independently. Students can understand the main points of clearly written standard texts on familiar topics related to work, school, leisure, etc. They can handle most situations that they may encounter when travelling and can write simple, coherent texts on familiar topics or personal interests.

Level B2 • Upper Intermediate Language Skills

At the B2 level, students have a good command of the foreign language and can understand the main ideas of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics. They can communicate reasonably fluently and spontaneously, write clear, detailed texts on a wide range of topics, and explain viewpoints on current issues. Students are able to participate in discussions and debates, using a broader vocabulary and more complex grammatical structures.

Level C1 • Advanced Language Skills

At the C1 level, students have developed their ability to use the language effectively. They are able to understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and to recognise implicit meaning. They are able to express themselves fluently and spontaneously without having to search for the right words. They are flexible and effective in using the language, adapting to different social, academic and professional contexts.

Level C2 • Near-native Proficiency

This level is the highest stage of language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At this level, language learners can effortlessly understand practically all content they hear or read. They can summarize information from various oral and written sources and reproduce arguments and presentations in a coherent manner. Their language use is accurate, nuanced, and practically indistinguishable from that of a native speaker.
