Language level B1 – briefly explained
The German B1 level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), represents the intermediate stage of language proficiency. Learners at B1 level can communicate independently in everyday life, work, and education, and express their thoughts clearly.
Typical skills at B1 level:
- Speaking: Conduct simple conversations, express opinions, describe experiences and plans
- Listening: Understand the main points of conversations and media on familiar topics
- Reading: Understand texts on everyday life, work, or education-related topics
- Writing: Write short reports, emails, or messages clearly
- Everyday life: Handle daily situations independently, e.g., shopping, doctor visits, or dealing with authorities

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
It is suitable for anyone with basic to intermediate knowledge who can engage in simple conversations, understand texts, and express information independently.
The exam consists of two parts:
- Written exam: Reading comprehension, language elements, listening comprehension, written expression
- Oral exam: Speaking, usually in pairs or small groups, with 20 minutes of preparation time
- Written exam: approx. 2.5 hours
- Oral exam: approx. 15 minutes
Both parts usually take place on the same day.
The telc Deutsch B1 exam cannot be taken online. It is conducted in person at our licensed GoAcademy! examination center in Düsseldorf. However, preparation courses can be attended online.
- Valid photo ID (identity card or passport)
- Exam confirmation / registration confirmation
- Pens, eraser, ruler for the written exam
- Optional: water or small snacks for breaks
Note: Mobile phones and electronic devices are not allowed.
The evaluation and issuance of the certificate is carried out exclusively by telc – GoAcademy! has no influence on this process.
- For a paper-based telc Deutsch B1 exam, it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to receive the results.
- For a digital telc Deutsch B1 exam, results are typically available after about 9 days.
Please note that for paper-based exams, delays may occur, as the processing time depends on telc.
